Capel Iwan Archive

Places

This is linked to a series of web pages, assembled by Jim Batten, from files provided by Mr. Ieuan James.
They are based on a CD ROM, prepared by Capel Iwan PTA, to mark the retirement of Mr. James in 2004, and celebrate his twenty eight years as head teacher of Capel Iwan School.

Use this link to get back to the list of sections.

Field names with their owners and tenants as at 15th. October 1891 are detailed in the tithe-apportionment ledger held at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.
This links to a Tithe map. The "Help" option (at the top) is really helpfull, covering the search and map facilities.

Cadw The Welsh body controlling Listed Buildings.
Cadw is the historic environment service of the Welsh Government and part of the Tourism and Culture group.
Bidwells A Grade 2 listed building is defined as a UK building or structure that is "of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve it".
[They] .. are legally protected from being demolished, extended or significantly altered without special permission from the local planning authority.
Wikipedia A listed building, or listed structure, is one that has been placed on the statutory lists maintained by ... Cadw in Wales,
In England and Wales, a national amenity society must be notified of any work to a listed building which involves any element of demolition.
Exemption from secular listed building control is provided for some buildings in current use for worship, but only in cases
where the relevant religious organisation operates its own equivalent permissions procedure.
Owners of listed buildings are, in some circumstances, compelled to repair and maintain them and can face criminal prosecution
if they fail to do so or if they perform unauthorised alterations.
When alterations are permitted, or when listed buildings are repaired or maintained, the owners are often required to use specific materials or techniques.
Concrete Renovations They should be treated with the utmost care and respect, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t be changed, extended or repaired.
For the most part, any renovation works must not drastically change the appearance or feel of the structure and its surrounding areas.
Historic England Owners will need to apply for Listed Building Consent for most types of work that affect the 'special architectural or historic interest' of their home.

As it stated on the CD, this ... is not, by any means, a "finished article", as it is hoped that future editions ... will include additional photos, memories, articles and research; which are invited for contribution by any member of the community.
